What Just Safe Food covers

Just Safe Food is OFW's low-cost food-handler training program. It covers the same fundamentals as paid training providers — but at no cost to the worker, on your phone, on your schedule.

• Personal hygiene and handwashing
• Temperature control: hot holding, cold holding, danger zones
• Cross-contamination prevention
• Allergen awareness and labeling
• Cleaning, sanitizing, and dishwashing protocols
• Pest control and storage basics
• What to do if you get sick (and your rights to paid sick leave)

How long it takes

Most workers complete the course in 2–3 hours, often broken into 15–20 minute sessions on a phone. The certification exam is online and can be retaken at no cost.

Where it's accepted

Many state and county health codes require a food-handler certification within 30 days of starting a kitchen job. Just Safe Food is accepted in jurisdictions that recognize ANSI-accredited training. Check your local health department to confirm acceptance before you rely on it — if your jurisdiction requires a specific in-state provider, we can route you.

Why we offer it

Paid food-handler certifications cost $15–$25 — money that comes out of a tipped worker's pocket, often without reimbursement. For workers near the poverty line, that's a real barrier to starting a job. OFW's research showed it was also a barrier to advancement: workers couldn't afford to renew lapsed certifications and were locked out of positions that required them. Just Safe Food closes that gap.
